Business Continuity

The most important reason to find a perfect BDR (Backup and Disaster Recovery) solution is to have a Business Continuity plan in place. Business Continuity is the foundation in business to achieve one of the three principles of the CIA Triad Information Security model – Availability. For most businesses, Information Systems are the brains, of the operations. Because of that, organizations that have valuable data usually backup their data with a form of BDR solution. However, not many understand the difference in adding Business Continuity to such solution. For example, Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive can be used as part of a BDR solution, but it is not a Business Continuity solution because it is not fast enough to restore a business in an acceptable time. What business owners need to understand is that “The Cloud” is not a single piece of hardware that runs at the same speed everywhere. That is, Cloud environments can vary in speed for various reasons. A business owner might realize that purchasing cold storage is significantly less expensive than hot storage. However, that same decision-maker might not realize that restoring from a cold (or freezing) storage can take weeks to months (depending on the size of the environment).

Here at WeCcode, we achieve Business Continuity by ensuring that we understand our clients’ needs. We believe that all valuable data must be part of a Business Continuity plan. Data that is not part of a Business Continuity plan must be part of BDR (archiving) only or it is just trash. Business Continuity plans include secure networks, hardware, and software. Additionally, remote locations are required for most (very few exceptions) organizations looking to properly implement Business Continuity with their BDR plan. The pandemic proved even large organizations had poor (at best) Business Continuity plans. “Telstra coughs up $1.5M for number transfer failure.” In addition to BDR, Business Continuity covers working remotely. In order to securely work remotely, firewalls, VPNs, switches, proxies, IDS, IPS, antimalware, etc., are required. Without security measures in place, employees working remotely become a security risk. Today, teleworking is more common than restoring data.
